
Devils Tower in Wyoming as seen from the path that loops around its base. I took many shots of this formation, but I like this one because of the wispy clouds that seem to be emanating from the tower’s top. The large version makes an excellent desktop image.

Is the Tower the hardened lava in the throat of an extinct volcano, the cone around it having eroded away?
Actually, it isn’t part of an extinct volcano. It was formed under the surface of the earth as magma that hardened. Read here for a better explanation.
